5 Vegan Cheeses You Need to Try

We surveyed nearly a thousand vegans on living a cruelty-free lifestyle, and while answers varied, one thing was consistent: a pervasive interest in dairy-free cheese. Ya’ll can’t get enough of them! While anyone can make their own scrumptious, healthy, organic cheeses out of cashews or other nuts, there’s something to be said for that classic, easy, cheesy taste. On that, the following five brands definitely deliver, so you can leave cow's milk to the cows.

Field Roasts' Chao Creamery

While there are many delicious vegan cheeses, Chao products are my absolute favorite. With three flavors of cheese slices and two kinds of mac and cheese (A.K.A. Mac ‘N Chao) the selection is fairly limited. However, made from fermented tofu, each cheese packs a powerful punch of flavor, and easily melts on burgers or in sandwiches.

Follow Your Heart

From cheese blocks to shreds to a parmesan shaker, these yummy, organic cheeses are ready to steal your heart (yeah, I went there). Follow Your Heart cheese has been a staple in many a vegan’s refrigerators since it introduced its melting Vegan Gourmet Cheese in 2003 and has only gained momentum ever since.

Daiya

Though as common and prolific as it gets, Daiya is a bit of a dividing factor within the vegan community: you either love it or hate it. Personally, I’m down with Daiya. They have an amazingly large selection of products ranging from cheese slices and shredded cheeses to pizzas, yogurts, cheesecakes, and even burritos. My all-time favorite Daiya product, however, is their incredible boxed mac and cheeses.

Parmela Creamery Aged Nutcheese

Ignoring the unpleasantness of the phrase “aged nutcheese,” Parmela Creamery creates delicious products by slowly aging cashew milk. Shoppers can choose from the company’s shredded cheeses, sliced cheeses, nacho cheese, and alfredo sauce. I stumbled across their mozzarella cheese shreds on a trip to Gelson's Markets and was surprised because I hadn’t heard of them before.

Miyoko’s

Miyoko Schinner is an award-winning vegan chef who's brand emphasizes "artistry, integrity, ethics and conviviality." One of her more famous products is her vegan cheese wheels, which are perfect for cheese boards at your next party. Ethical eaters will also enjoy her delicious butter, mozzarella, cream cheese, and flavored spreads.
